María I Estuardo (1560), buscó unir los reinos de Inglaterra y Escocia intentando lograr que se reconociera a María como sucesora de
Isabel I. Con ese objetivo, apoyó los asesinatos de David Riccio y Lord
Darnley, y se unió una coalición de nobles católicos y protestantes. Después de que María huyó a Inglaterra en 1568, trató de restaurarla en el poder y rompió con los partidarios del rey infante Jacobo VI (
luego Jacobo I). En la resultante guerra civil, resistió en el castillo de Edimburgo hasta que fue obligado a rendirse; murió en prisión.
